Lawyernomics 2017: Day Two Recap

Good morning Las Vegas. My body is still on East Coast time so I’m up early this morning. We’ll be bringing you highlights of Lawyernomics Day Two throughout the day, so stay tuned.

Tom Breitling was the keynote speaker this morning and his presentation centered on the intersection of risk and profit. An appropriate theme with the Bellagio slot machines only a few hundred feet away. Breitling shared stories from his time building Travelscape and Expedia and urged the audience to embrace calculated risk as they build their own businesses.

Dan Lear, Vanessa Vasquez (one of our rock star clients!), Nicole Abboud, and Andrew Arruda gave a presentation ambitiously titled the The Future of Law in Thirty Minutes. They provided insight into changing demographics and evolving technology that will shape the practice of law moving forward. Vanessa talked about how she’s been able to build a thriving practice without sacrificing her family life and gave the audience ideas on how to do the same.

Nika Kabiri presented powerful research into the psycology of consumers when they’re looking for a lawyer. She explained that most people looking for a lawyer are stressed out and not thinking straight. So your marketing should reflect this and should be tailored towards meeting your potential clients in their current state of mind.

Meanwhile, the Spotlight Branding booth continued to be a hot spot. We had great conversations with a bunch of smart, entrepreneurial-minded attorneys. And yes, there was more Rock Band.

Later in the day, there were a number of helpful breakout sessions – including one led by Rob Thomas, who helped lawyers understand how they are being evaluated by their clients. Make no mistake about it, there are a lot of options out there, and it’s important to provide an excellent client experience.

Avvo’s Dan Lear closed out the conference with an entertaining “20n20” presentation in which he highlighted 20 of his favorite software applications – ranging from code.org to the “shame bell.”

Now it’s off to the airport for a red-eye flight back to Charlotte. Thanks to everyone who came out to our booth – we had a blast and hope you did too.
