Neuroplasticity is your brain’s ability to rewire itself in order to adapt to new circumstances or situations. While it is an emerging area of neuroscience, there are many studies that suggest neuroplasticity is the key to maintaining your mental faculties well into your older years with minimal decline. Even more, neuroplasticity has been shown to help with a variety of mental issues such as stress, depression, anxiety, and more.
While it may sound complicated, the actual practice of rewiring your brain is as simple as activating various parts of your brain on a regular basis. We’ve made that a focus for us here in the Spotlight Branding office, and we wanted to share with you the simple exercises and activities we have in place that help our team in hopes that it inspires you to add some of these things to your firm.
1. Playing Video Games
Yep, it’s not just a mind-numbing activity for your kids! Playing video games actually teaches your brain new skills and refines the ones you already have. Whether it’s motor coordination, visual recognition, spatial navigation, reaction time, problem-solving, or more, video games provide your brain with the exercise it needs to stay healthy.
According to an NIH review, gaming for only 16 hours (over a period of time, not all at once!) has shown to provide positive mental effects.
2. Exercise
We have an exercise nook in our office that contains yoga mats, free weights, and a rowing machine connected to Apple Fitness. These kinds of exercises help your cognitive functions like learning and memory. It also helps improve your motor coordination and brain connectivity. We’re also pretty into ping pong, which can make for some pretty intense exercise.
3. Play Chess
Yes, we have a chess board in our office open to anyone who wants to play. Studies show that chess players have significantly more gray matter in their brains than those who don’t play. And even if you don’t have a board or anyone to play with at the office, you can do it online!
Other Activities
Even if you don’t have anything you can do in your firm, there are other ways you can rewire your brain for positive benefits:
- Learn a new language
- Make music
- Travel to new places
- Make art
- Eat healthily
All of these activities can create new pathways in your brain and strengthen existing ones. Making these simple exercises part of your daily routine can help reduce stress, burnout, anxiety, depression, and more! All you have to do is commit to getting started.
