3 Quick Tips for Designing Your Firm’s Logo

While your firm’s brand is so much more than a logo and a tagline, you still need a logo that represents your firm. NOTE: Please don’t just type out your firm’s name in a fancy font, screenshot it, and call it your logo. You’re better than that.

Your logo is one of the first things someone sees as it relates to your company. However, it’s important to think about your logo as more than just a picture or fancy typography you use on social media platforms or the sign in your lobby. The color choice, shape, and overall design can elicit feelings in a potential consumer that can make or break a sale.

Below are a few tips to keep in mind when designing (or redesigning) or logo. Note that these can apply to other things as well, such as your website, business cards, and more.

  • Choose your color(s) wisely – Bright colors like yellow, orange, and red can elicit feelings of happiness, optimism, excitement, and urgency. Blues and greens are more calming. Dark colors, especially black and purple, are associated with power, authority, and wisdom. White is associated with purity and cleanliness, while gray is more about practicality.
  • Your font choice says a lot – Serif (the little projections finishing off a stroke in a letter) fonts in all/small caps elicit a sense of trustworthiness. These fonts also translate well on print and in larger sizes. Sans serif fonts are typically found on digital copy, but also project a modern and clean approach.
  • Let the design bring it all together – What sorts of icons, lines, or shapes will accompany your logo? Round shapes evoke positive emotional messages such as unity, stability, and community. Squares, triangles, vertical lines, and other sharp angles project strength and professionalism. Horizontal lines, on the other hand, are more tranquil.
