For many of us, work can stress us out. Throw owning your firm on top of that, and it’s easy to see why so many small business owners experience high levels of stress and burnout (especially lawyers!). Stress can be the catalyst for many other health problems, so it’s important to keep it in check. Here are 5 easy ways you can manage it.
1. Be Aware of It
If you’re reading this article, chances are that you’re somewhat aware that you’re stressed out. But what we mean here is a broader awareness. You’re not alone in this. Millions of other business owners all over the world are feeling the same things you’re feeling right now.
That’s not to downplay how you feel, but rather give you hope that all of the things you’re dealing with right now can be addressed and dealt with.
2. Start Delegating
Even if you’re a true solo, DELEGATE! Find vendors out there who can do the things you don’t particularly enjoy doing (and who will do them better than you). Once you have tasks like bookkeeping, marketing reception, etc. off your plate, you’ll have more free time in front of you. From there, you can choose what to do with that time—relax, take on more work you enjoy doing, or give yourself more time to work through your current caseload.

3. Document Your Processes
A bit source of stress for firm owners is either constantly training new people or reminding current staff of the way things should be done. If your processes and procedures are properly documented, you’ll spend less time constantly training and retraining because everyone will know exactly what to do by checking the manual.
4. Adopt Tech
The funny thing about stress is that it oftentimes lulls us into a false sense of security of staying in our comfort zone when it’s that exact zone that’s causing a lot of the stress. Making some changes in your comfort zone can lead to feeling a lot better, and one way to do that is through tech.
Legal and financial pros are often the last ones to adopt new tech designed to make your firm run more efficiently. However, the benefits far outweigh the risks when it comes to these solutions. All of them have great support to lean on to get implemented and maintained. Yes, it will take a time investment up front to learn and implement, but the benefits will save you a TON of time and stress in the future.
5. Work with a Coach
There are plenty of great business coaches and organizations out there designed to help make your life easier. It also gives you the opportunity to connect with other firm owners where you can share similar experiences. Oftentimes you’ll meet people who have dealt with the same problems you may currently be facing and give you new perspectives on how to solve them.
Don’t let stress drive your life! There are plenty of resources out there to help you, but your stress will just try to distract you from making that first step. Don’t fall into that trap!
