AI Hallucination Explained

Over the last year, we’ve dug in and learned as much as we can about all of the new tech available to us. But as with anything, there are some bugs and issues we need to be aware of. One of these issues with AI is known as “hallucination,” and we’re going to explain what that is in this article.

AI hallucination refers to a phenomenon where artificial intelligence systems generate inaccurate or misleading outputs, deviating from the intended results. This can happen for several reasons. First, biased or incomplete datasets used to train AI models can result in distorted outputs, reflecting the biases or limitations present in the data.

Additionally, complex algorithms employed in AI systems may produce unexpected or unintended results, especially when faced with novel or ambiguous scenarios. Even more, insufficient or inadequate training of AI models can lead to suboptimal performance, increasing the likelihood of hallucinated outputs.

For instance, consider a scenario where a law firm adopts an AI-powered legal research tool to assist them in analyzing case law and precedents. Despite rigorous testing and validation, the AI system occasionally produces hallucinated outputs, incorrectly interpreting certain legal principles or misrepresenting relevant case law. This could lead to lawyers relying on flawed or inaccurate information when advising clients or preparing legal arguments, ultimately undermining the quality and reliability of their legal services.

You can see how this can be a real problem if not caught or checked. Reliance on hallucinated outputs can compromise the accuracy and credibility of legal advice provided to clients, potentially leading to adverse outcomes in legal proceedings. Even more, erroneous interpretations of legal principles or case law may result in flawed decision-making, affecting the overall efficacy of representation. Additionally, the discovery of hallucinated outputs in AI-generated documents or analyses could undermine the trust and confidence of clients in the firm’s use of AI technology, impacting client relationships and reputation.

Furthermore, the legal profession is inherently bound by ethical obligations to provide competent and diligent representation to clients. Lawyers have a duty to exercise professional judgment and diligence in their practice, including the use of AI technology. However, AI hallucination introduces inherent uncertainties and risks that may impede lawyers’ ability to fulfill their ethical obligations effectively. Failure to recognize and mitigate the risks of AI hallucination could expose lawyers to professional liability and disciplinary actions, further underscoring the importance of vigilance and due diligence in the use of AI technology in legal practice.

That’s why it’s important to see AI as a tool, not a replacement. It can do a lot of the legwork for you, but in the end, you still need to check and verify that the information it provides to you is accurate. Although this risk is present in AI use, it certainly doesn’t mean you should avoid it entirely. Simply put, you just need to verify the results rather than blindly trusting them.
