As a business owner, you’ve heard it over and over: you have to get on Facebook. Social media marketing has been a popular trend for several years now—and with good reason. The fact is that social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn offer the opportunity to reach a virtually unlimited audience—for little to no cost. But there is more to creating an effective presence than simply creating a profile and waiting for the business to roll in. Today, we’re going to focus on Facebook as we share specific strategies for engaging your audience:
1) Share pictures. One of the primary goals of most businesses on Facebook is to “go viral”. The concept is simple—as Facebookers comment, “like”, and share your posts, their friends are exposed to your content. For that reason, posting content that generates a response from your audience, even if it’s as simple as a “like”, is key. Studies have conclusively shown that posting images is the best way to do this—likely because it’s very easy for the audience to engage. Whether it’s a picture of your team on the job, an interesting infographic, or even a comic strip to brighten your audience’s day, sharing images must be a part of your regular strategy.
2) Use Facebook’s “Ask Question” Functionality. Facebook now allows you to poll your audience—and it’s very easy both to create and to participate in. Everyone wants to feel that their opinion matters, and your Facebook audience is no exception. Ask them what they’d like you to cover in your next blog series. Ask them which of your products is their favorite. Ask them which team they are pulling for in the big game tonight! (Remember, it doesn’t have to be all business, all the time—the goal is to build relationships!)
3) Update your audience when news breaks. When events that will impact your market occur, share them! As a tax accountant, for instance, keep your audience up to date on recent laws that relate to the tax code—and explain the potential impact.
4) Share valuable information. Provide value to your audience. Sharing news, as discussed above, is one way to do this—but you can also share blog posts, helpful tips, and other information. At the end of the day, if you aren’t providing value to your audience, they’re going to tune you out.
5) Host a contest. Finally, consider hosting a contest in which your audience can win a prize. It can be as simple as asking them to post a picture on your wall of themselves using your products—or you can be much more creative. Feel free to get in touch with us to discuss this concept in more depth.
There’s no point to creating a Facebook page if you don’t have a plan to engage your audience. These tactics will form the core of an effective strategy, but please contact us today if you would like to learn more!
