Lawyernomics 2017: Day One Recap

The venue for Lawyernomics 2017

We’re coming to you from Lawyernomics 2017, held this year at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas.

We’re proud to be sponsoring the conference for the second year in a row.

Day One of the conference featured some great speakers – including Avvo CEO Mark Britton, who broke down several key changes to the legal environment. Britton noted that lawyer job growth has dramatically slowed, with legal work often going to paralegals rather than attorneys. In addition, consumers often avoid hiring a lawyer altogether because of perceived high prices and underwhelming value. He encouraged the lawyers in attendance to respond to market changes and look for ways to meet consumer demand in new ways.

Late in the day, Chris Anderson of How to Manage a Small Law Firm led a breakout session focused on the importance of creating a marketing plan for your small firm. Without a plan, you’re flying blind and your practice is going to grow inconsistently at best.

Michael Crisp wrapped up for the afternoon with an interesting presentation on the future of client acquisition – including drawing lessons from Donald Trump’s social media strategy during the 2016 presidential campaign. He discussed the importance of building a brand for your law practice, rather than being reduced to an interchangeable commodity. We couldn’t agree more.

Meanwhile, in the main exhibit hall, our team had spent Thursday afternoon putting together our booth:

The finishing touches

We had it ready to go Friday morning and Rock Band was a hit – conference attendees had the chance to show off their skills on the guitar and we got to tell them how our services make lawyers look like rock stars on the internet. In today’s market, lawyers face extreme competition from a number of different directions, and a strong brand is essential in order to stand out from the crowd.

We also gave out a self assessment worksheet which enabled lawyers to rate their own “rock star status” on a scale from Nickelback to Jimi Hendrix. (No offense to the three Nickelback fans out there.) It helps lawyers evaluate their website, their e-newsletter, their social media presence, and much more.

If you’d like to see how you rate, click here to take YOUR Rock Star Assessment. It’s a great way to identify what you’re doing well, and where you can improve.

All in all, Day One was great and we’re looking forward to more great speakers tomorrow. Our friend and client Vanessa Vasquez will be participating in a panel discussion that’s sure to be interesting, and Avvo’s Dan Lear traditionally closes the conference with an entertaining presentation. If you’re here at the conference and you haven’t stopped by our booth yet, make sure you do it tomorrow!
