Studies have shown positive people have success in health, work, and relationships. So, ring in the new year with positivity. Your staff will thank you. As a business owner, you are the role model setting the tone for your firm. So, lead by example and create a firm that thrives from positivity!

A positive mindset reinforces your ability to find opportunities and solve problems. It also leads to better health for you and your staff. All of which contribute to the growth of your firm. So, how do you create a positive mindset that supports a solution-oriented, growth-focused healthy firm? Here are some actionable tips to get started:

Tip #1:  Journal

And not just any journaling. A Berkeley study proved that people who wrote in a gratitude journal experienced more gratitude, positive moods, and optimism about the future, as well as better sleep. Writing what you’re thankful for shifts your focus from what’s going wrong to what’s going right. This can be general gratitude or specific prompts on your journal sheets.

Being thankful and writing out great moments in your life boosts your spirits. Happiness and positivity are contagious. It leads to better interactions with coworkers and customers promoting retention for both.

Tip #2: Reevaluate Your Content Consumption

While “you are what you eat” rings true, it’s also true for what you read, watch, and listen to! Legal and financial content can be more negative than positive at times, so consider consuming less negative content. It’s one thing to “be in the know,” but it’s another to allow news, movies, music, and rants to get you down.

The American Psychological Association cites that more than half of Americans who follow news regularly cause them stress. Your job can be stressful, no need to add to the drama. Instead, consume content that enriches your well-being or develops your growth in a positive way.

Tip #3: Pay Attention to Your Language

Language influences others. Using positive language in your firm increases positivity and optimism. It also increases productivity!

Much like the content you consume, words and conversations are essential to mindset. Pay attention to your behavior – are you spiteful or spirited? Is your attitude optimistic or pessimistic? Are your words uplifting or damaging? Constructive or destructive?

How do you feel after voicing your thoughts? Also, notice the reaction from people you speak with. If your words are inspirational, then you’re on the right track. If not, rethink how you can positively contribute to conversations, even if it’s with yourself!

Tip #4: Challenge Yourself to Find Opportunities, Not Problems

Author John Maxwell talks about people walking around with two buckets. One bucket contains water and the other gasoline. In your life, you come across small fires and you have a choice to either pour water or gasoline on them. The choice is yours.

In most small businesses, there’s often a lot of fire. Do you want to be remembered as the person who “adds fuel to the fire” or be known for solving problems?

To stay on a positive path, implement an opportunity versus challenges concept. Set a daily goal for yourself to turn one problem into an opportunity. Look for the silver lining in every situation. When you find the silver lining it encourages emotional resilience. And when your mind is healthier and happier you make better choices.

Tip #5: Reflect on Your Day

A study by Harvard Business School, HEC Paris, Bocconi University, and the University of North Carolina found a rich understanding of how using reflection encourages learning and growth.

When you reflect on your day it gives you clarity and an appreciation for what you did well and what you can do differently next time. In the evening, ask yourself what the best part of your day was. Pinpoint an accomplishment, win, or an overall great experience. It’s a sure way to a healthy and positive mind.

Balance equally and reflect on the worst part of your day. Owning your part in situations helps your mental growth and prepares you for your next challenge.

Creating a positive mindset is healthy for you and your firm. No matter where you are in your thought process, you can make small, effective changes that will remarkably improve your practice. Don’t wait. Elevating the mindsets of you and your staff that will impact the health, well-being, and growth of your firm.
