Why Your Law Firm Needs a Mobile-Friendly Website

A mobile-friendly website is no longer optional for law firms – it’s a necessity. If your website isn’t mobile-friendly, it is very likely costing you business.

Here are a couple of facts that illustrate why:

Over 200 million adults in the United States currently own a smartphone. And in the US, mobile devices are now used to access the internet more frequently than desktop computers

48% of mobile users start the search process on a search engine (as opposed to an app or some other website). Google and other search engines detect when a user is on a mobile device, and when that’s the case, they penalize sites that are not mobile-friendly in their search results

So if your law firm website isn’t mobile-friendly:

1 – the majority of prospective clients who find your site aren’t able to access it properly.

2 – if a prospective client is searching for a lawyer on their smartphone or tablet – your site might not even show up at all.

Hopefully you can see how important it is that your website is mobile-friendly. If your law firm website isn’t, you need to do something about it, sooner rather than later. Now, answers to common questions we get on the subject:

“What does it mean for a website to be mobile-friendly?”

It simply means that your website displays differently when a visitor is on a mobile device. Without getting too technical, your website is able to detect what type of device your visitors are using, and it adjusts accordingly. Lawyers sometimes ask us whether they need to create a second, entirely separate website for mobile users, and that’s not the case. A mobile-friendly website simply adjusts so that it displays properly on any device.

“I get my business from referrals so why does it matter?”

It matters because even people who are referred to you are likely to visit your website. Even when that referral comes from a trusted friend, family member, or colleague – most prospective clients are going to check out your website before they schedule a consultation. And the statistics cited above tell us that they are more likely to do so on a mobile device than on a desktop.

What happens when they get to your site and it doesn’t display properly on their phone or tablet? Maybe the referral carries enough weight that they call you anyway. Maybe it doesn’t. Or maybe the individual is considering hiring you or another lawyer, and his/her site does display properly on their device. It could be the difference between winning the business, or not.

Here’s the good news: it’s not hard to have a mobile-friendly website built for your firm. All of the websites we build for our clients are mobile-friendly. Is yours?
