Your digital presence should position your law firm as the “obvious choice” for your ideal clients.
When a new potential client lands on your website, they should be able to tell right away that they are in the right place.
(Or, if they’re not a qualified prospect, they should be able to tell immediately so that they don’t waste their time or your time.)
The first step, if you haven’t already done it, is defining what your ideal client looks like.
Don’t Try to Be Everything to Everyone
It is much easier to build authority around one practice area or a closely related group of practice areas than it is to become known for a bunch of different services.
Think about the difference between marketing yourself as a general “jack of all trades” attorney and positioning yourself as the firm for high-net-worth estate planning in your market.
A clear, focused niche makes it much easier to build your brand and market your firm. It also makes your firm easier to operate, because you don’t have to reinvent the wheel every time you sign up a new client.
Answer the Questions Keeping Your Clients Up at Night
Once you understand your ideal client, start creating content that speaks to their biggest problems, opportunities, or anxieties.
A simple exercise to get started is making a list of the top 5 questions you hear most often during consultations or initial conversations.
Then create content which answers them, one at a time.
Turn those answers into blogs, videos, social media content, and other educational resources. Instead of creating generic legal content, you are speaking directly to the questions your best prospects are already asking.
When someone discovers your firm and sees that you understand their exact concerns, they feel an instant connection before you ever meet.
Authority Goes Beyond Content
Content is important, but it is not the only signal prospective clients use when evaluating your firm.
Reviews matter too. A strong volume of reviews demonstrates that real people have worked with your firm and helps establish trust.
Awards, certifications, and recognition can also strengthen your positioning. Whether it is an industry award, professional recognition, or even recognition as a great workplace in your community, these signals reinforce the credibility you are trying to build.
Your website then becomes the place where all of these pieces come together.
Become the Obvious Choice
Authority is not created by repeatedly telling people how good you are.
It is created by demonstrating that you understand a specific audience, answering their questions, showing proof that others trust you, and consistently communicating your expertise.
